Facial Feminization Surgery

Facial feminization surgery (FFS) is a group of surgical procedures to alter the forehead, nose, cheeks, jaw and chin to create a more traditionally female facial appearance. Transgender women may choose to undergo one or more of these procedures to help them better align their physical appearance with their gender identity.

Because traditional male facial features tend to be more pronounced or angular, FFS procedures seek to soften the overall appearance of the face while maintaining natural-looking results and preserving function. The facial plastic surgeons at University Hospitals have advanced training in performing these procedures and provide all FFS services in a compassionate, supportive environment.

Taking the First Step

Making the decision to undergo facial feminization procedures is a highly personalized one. Every person’s facial structure and personal goals vary widely so the first step is to schedule a consultation with one of our highly trained plastic surgeons.

Our surgeons work with each patient to determine which procedures will best achieve their goals and expectations. At the initial consultation, your doctor will assess your facial anatomy and may use imaging software to simulate the potential outcome of each procedure being considered.

Preparation & Recovery From FFS

Because FFS procedures permanently alter the facial structure and appearance, patients may be urged to undergo counseling prior to scheduling surgery. Trained counselors can help each person to manage expectations and understand the emotional impact these procedures can have before and after surgery.

Recovery time will vary greatly depending on the procedure(s) performed. Most patients will need 2 – 6 weeks off work as they recover from surgery while final results may not be achieved for several months.
