Specialized Training in Clinical Psychiatry for Pediatricians

The Post Pediatric Portal Program at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center was established in 2007 to provide training in general and child & adolescent psychiatry for graduates of ACGME-accredited pediatric residencies who wish to pursue formal training in clinical psychiatry.

The program offers a 36-month training experience that meets the requirements for board certification in both general psychiatry and child & adolescent psychiatry. With over 1,000 licensed beds, UH Cleveland Medical Center provides a rich and diverse clinical environment. Two training positions are available each year. Recruitment follows a rolling admissions process, although we recommend submitting applications and supporting documents by April of the year prior to your intended start.

The general psychiatry and child & adolescent psychiatry training programs collaborate to provide a comprehensive experience designed to meet the requirements of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology for eligibility in both general and child & adolescent psychiatry board certification.

All training occurs alongside general psychiatry residents and child & adolescent psychiatry fellows in the traditional tracks. During the first year, portal fellows complete inpatient and consultation-liaison rotations in general and child & adolescent psychiatry. The second and third years focus on outpatient care for both pediatric and adult populations.

Didactics during the first 18 months are conducted with general psychiatry residents, while the second 18 months integrate fellows with child & adolescent psychiatry didactics.

Supervision follows the standards of both general psychiatry residency and child & adolescent fellowship programs.

On-call responsibilities are assigned during the second year in conjunction with the child & adolescent program; first- and third-year portal fellows currently have no on-call duties.
