ACGME-Accredited Adult Psychiatry Residency Program

Adult Psychiatry Team

University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center’s Adult Psychiatry Residency Program offers a strong foundation, mentoring and the best possible learning experience in all areas of psychiatry. Our strong fellowship programs support our residents as they explore the many sub-specialties of psychiatry.

Each year we accept nine residents into our four-year psychiatry residency program, enough for you to feel like a part of a larger group but small enough to stand out as an individual. We seek out candidates who are well-rounded, passionate, and resilient – qualities we consider indicative of one’s future as a psychiatrist, both as a practitioner and field-leader.

Education & Training Excellence for Adult Psychiatry

Our psychiatry residency program is structured to provide tomorrow’s psychiatrists with the skills needed to navigate this country’s increasingly complex healthcare system, including:

  • Comprehensive didactic programming
  • Diverse and robust clinical schedules
  • Professional mentoring
  • Scholarly opportunities inclusive of quality improvement projects
  • Engagement with interdisciplinary specialists

The first year of training is focused on developing core competencies in medicine, neurology and psychiatry. The second year continues to develop these core competencies and allows residents to explore further reaches of inpatient psychiatric practice with exposure to a longitudinal outpatient clinic. Third and fourth years are focused on excellence in outpatient psychiatric practice. In the tail end of the program, residents have access to a wide variety of diverse outpatient experiences in many outpatient care settings near and around the Cleveland area.

While the first two years of training are primarily focused on the biological perspective of psychiatry, the latter two years integrate a firm grounding in psychotherapy. A hallmark of our program is third and fourth year ambulatory clinics in which senior residents begin outpatient clinics, functioning as both prescribers and therapists. We provide senior residents latitude and flexibility to spend additional time in areas of their choosing for clinical or scholarly pursuits that will further their career interests.  There are approximately three hours per week of one-on-one attending supervision across the third and fourth training years.

House Information

New to the UH Psychiatry Residency Program is the House system. The house system was developed to facilitate team building, promote interaction and informal mentorship between early and later career residents, and direct energy towards some of our programs’ core efforts which include graduate medical education, clinical excellence and leadership, philanthropy and community engagement, and resident life and wellness.

Each house is named after a Cleveland Legend in psychiatry. We think it's important to remember our roots and the many psychiatrists that paved the way for us to provide the behavioral healthcare we give today. We hope to cultivate the energy they gave their communities and patients so that it can be given to generations of resident learners and patients for years to come.

Comprehensive Didactic Curriculum

The University Hospitals Psychiatry Residency Program offers a comprehensive didactic curriculum designed to equip residents with the knowledge and skills necessary for the clinical diagnosis, treatment, and management of a wide range of psychiatric conditions. This robust curriculum covers key areas such as psychotic disorders, mood and anxiety disorders, trauma disorders, substance use disorders, personality disorders, and aspects related to identity and sexuality. Additionally, residents gain an in-depth understanding of neuroscience, with a special emphasis on the social determinants of health, ensuring a holistic approach to patient care.
