Alternate Pathway Radiology Fellowship for International Medical Graduates
The University Hospitals Radiology Department’s Alternate Pathway Fellowship Program is committed to equipping residents with the comprehensive knowledge, advanced skills, and deep understanding needed to thrive in the dynamic field of radiology. Our expert faculty, state-of-the-art technology, and thoughtfully designed curriculum create a learning environment that fosters growth, innovation, and clinical excellence.
Our four-year program is specifically designed for international medical graduates (IMGs) who have completed a radiology residency outside the United States and are seeking an alternative to the traditional U.S. radiology residency pathway. This unique program enables IMGs to complete four years of specialized radiology fellowship training at a single institution within an eight-year timeframe, making them eligible for certification by the American Board of Radiology (ABR).
ABR certification opens doors for IMGs to practice radiology in the U.S., subject to fulfilling medical licensing and immigration requirements. For detailed information about the Alternate Pathway and board eligibility, please visit the ABR website.
We seek candidates who are deeply committed to clinical excellence and passionate about education and teaching. Ideal applicants also demonstrate a strong track record of scholarly activity or research, active service in professional societies, meaningful contributions to the field of radiology, and exceptional communication skills.
Curriculum Overview
Our program ensures every trainee completes at least two years of ACGME-accredited fellowship training, meeting Ohio Medical Board eligibility requirements. The curriculum begins with foundational training in Nuclear Medicine and Neuroradiology during the first two years. In the final two years, trainees choose from advanced fellowship options based on their interests and availability: Abdominal Imaging, Cardiothoracic Imaging, or Musculoskeletal Imaging. While we strive to accommodate preferences, admission to some fellowships is competitive.
Year 1: Nuclear Medicine
Year 2: Neuroradiology
Years 3 & 4: Choose from the following (pending availability):
Medical Licensing and Visa Information
Applicants must have the legal ability to work in the United States or meet criteria for obtaining work authorization. Our program sponsors H-1B visas, and therefore candidates must fulfill H-1B eligibility, including successful completion of all USMLE steps (including Step 3). We can also transfer an existing H-1B visa from another institution if offered the four-year pathway.
Please note, we are unable to sponsor J-1 visas or provide J-1 waiver support for H-1B visa qualification. Acceptance is contingent upon obtaining the appropriate medical license for training.
