PGY1 Pharmacy Training
PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency Offers Extensive Training in Acute Care Medication Management
University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center, a Campus of UH Regional Hospitals Department of Pharmacy in Chardon, Ohio currently offers three positions in our PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency. The PGY1 pharmacy residency is a one-year, postgraduate pharmacy education and training program with a goal of providing trainees advanced knowledge and skills relating to patient care as a member of an interprofessional healthcare team in an academic community hospital setting. Residents will be afforded opportunities to round with Clinical Pharmacy Specialists and interact with Medical Residents through interdisciplinary rounds and lectures.
Goals of Residency
In the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency, an emphasis is placed on the following goals:
- Acute Care Pharmacy Practice
- Communication with patients, prescribers, and the healthcare team
- Evidence-based medication management and pharmacotherapeutic monitoring
- Leadership
- Lifelong learning
- Medication Safety
To meet these goals, the resident will rotate through a variety of patient care areas at UH Geauga Medical Center such as:
- Antimicrobial Stewardship
- Critical Care Medicine, (Academic Rounding)
- Emergency Medicine
- Internal Medicine, (Academic Rounding)
- Practice Management
- Pharmacy Operations
Upon completing the experience, trainees will develop a strong foundation to pursue a career as a pharmacy clinician or further training in a PGY2 residency.
Resident Responsibilities
PGY1 pharmacy residency responsibilities at UH Geauga Medical Center include the following:
- Attending and presenting at the ASHP Midyear meeting
- Completing a pharmacy practice research project and presenting a platform presentation
- Investigating, researching and reporting adverse drug events
- Participating in the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee process
- Teaching and Precepting pharmacy students from a number of colleges of pharmacy
- Providing clinical pharmacy services (direct patient care, drug information, drug therapy monitoring, patient-specific consultations, healthcare staff and patient education), while also completing required and elective rotations
- Providing rotating pharmacy staffing service
- Serving as an informational and patient problem solving resource for clinical staff pharmacists

Elective Learning Experiences
Residents may choose 2 elective monthly rotations with the option for an elective longitudinal rotation to gain a teaching certificate through NEOMED.
- Academia
- Ambulatory Internal Medicine
- Clinical Medical Writing
- Teaching Learning Certificate Program (NEOMED)
- May repeat core rotation areas as advanced rotation
- Other: Learning opportunities arranged based on individual resident's interests as available
