Medical School Elective Rotations in Genetics

The Center for Human Genetics at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center offers eligible medical students the options of the following clinical genetics rotations:

  • Two-week elective
  • One-month elective
  • One-month acting internship (with one of the above rotations as a prerequisite)

Rotation Objectives:

  • Recognize what are unique aspects of clinical care for patients with rare or undiagnosed genetic disease
  • Collect a complete genetic history and construct a 3-generation pedigree
  • Formulate genetic-based differential diagnosis by understanding the main classifications of genetic and metabolic diseases
  • distinguish benign from causal genomic variants
  • Effectively communicate genetic information to patients, families, the patient care team, and nursing staff
  • Identify online resources to identify, treat, and teach others about genetic conditions
  • Present a patient or genetic condition at the last case conference.

Elective Description

Under supervision of genetics attending physicians, the medical students will work closely with genetics residents, genetics counselors, metabolic nurse and metabolic dietician to participate in clinical care and educational activities in both inpatient and outpatient settings at UH Cleveland Medical Center. 

in addition to participating in direct patient care on the inpatient, outpatient, and consult services, medical students will be introduced to basic and advanced principles of genetics by attendance at weekly case conference; grand rounds; genetics resident noon conference and in one-on-one didactic interactions with faculty members.

How to Apply

Visiting medical students wishing to take an elective can apply through the AAMC-VSLO platform.

The sole exception is with our major affiliate, Case Western Reserve University. CWRU SOM students should continue to register through the Case SOM Registrar’s Office.
