Vampire Facials & Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Procedures
The facial plastic experts at University Hospitals offer platelet-rich plasma (PRP) facial procedures to help improve the appearance of your skin without surgery. PRP can be directly injected into the skin, also known as a vampire facial, or applied over the skin after a microneedling procedure. Both procedures incorporate the benefits of PRP to stimulate collagen production, speed up cell turnover and give your skin a refreshed, more youth appearance. PRP treatment options are noninvasive, safe and require little downtime for recovery.

Benefits of Vampire Facials and PRP Treatments
PRP treatments use a patient’s own blood to create platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which is injected back into the skin during the procedure. PRP is rich in growth factors, which can promote healing and cellular regeneration and restore your skin’s vibrancy. Some of the benefits seen with vampire facials and PRP treatments include:
- Brighter and more even skin tone
- Increased skin firmness and elasticity
- Reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Reduced appearance of pores, acne scars and sun damage
- Smoother skin texture
Vampire facials and PRP procedures are ideal for someone looking to achieve subtle, natural-looking results without surgery. Results will not be as dramatic as with surgical cosmetic procedures.
PRP has other cosmetic uses as well. It can be used for hair loss when injected into the scalp and can be used as filler in certain areas of the face, such as the undereye area (tear troughs).
How It Works
PRP procedures can be done in your plastic surgeon’s office and usually take less than an hour to perform. First, a small amount of your blood will be collected via needle from your arm. The blood will be put in a device called a centrifuge, which spins and separates the blood components, concentrating the platelets in the plasma.
The provider will inject the PRP into targeted areas of the face using either a syringe or while using a microneedling device. The provider may also inject fillers to further enhance the effects of the procedure.
After the Procedure
You may experience minor redness and swelling in the first couple days following the procedure. You should be able to see some improvement in skin appearance within the first week, with results gradually developing in the following weeks. Depending on your skin goals, your provider may recommend additional treatments spaced 4 – 6 weeks apart.
Results can last several months. Many patients choose to schedule maintenance treatments 1 – 2 times a year to extend their results.
Risks of Vampire Facials/PRP Procedures
Because they are non-invasive, PRP procedures come with fewer risks than surgery. The procedure is overall very safe. However, some potential side effects can include mild swelling, tenderness, tingling, bruising and itching.
