Characteristics of our Fellows
We welcome applications from pediatricians who are committed to patient care, education and scholarship and who have completed an accredited pediatric residency program and are eligible for the Pediatric Boards.
Our current and previous fellows come from a variety of training backgrounds. They have completed advanced degrees in medical education as well as public health. We are able to tailor training to meet a wide range of clinical and scholarly interests and welcome innovation and forward thinking in our fellowship applicants.
We are committed to providing excellent training for outstanding clinicians.
After Graduation
Our fellowship is designed to give trainees strong clinical skills to allow them to enter either community or academic hospital medicine. Our previous fellowship graduates are now spread throughout the country working in a variety of settings. Several previous fellows hold leadership roles in education and primary faculty appointments in Academic Pediatrics Hospital Medicine divisions at institutions such as UH Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Cleveland Clinic Children’s, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, Levine Children’s Hospital, and University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
Our Fellows

Natalie Balfe, MD
Dr. Natalie Balfe is native Clevelander. She moved to Chicago to complete your undergraduate degree at Chicago Medical School. She completed her residency in combined Internal Medicine/Pediatric Residency at Penn State. Natalie has a professional interest in a career as a combined internal medicine and pediatric hospitalist and has a passion with quality improvement and medical education. She enjoys cooking, baking, and discovering new restaurants. She also enjoys listening to all genres of music and staying active within the community. Natalie was extremely excited to have the opportunity to move back to the area for fellowship. She grew up knowing Rainbow as a leader in pediatric medicine in Cleveland and wanted to train somewhere where she would not only get exceptional training but have a supportive environment of staff and faculty dedicated helping obtain her career goals.

Kendall Franz, MD
Dr. Franz is from Buffalo, NY, where she attended medical school at the Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences at the University of Buffalo. She completed her Med-Peds residency and chief year at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s. Dr. Fanz’s clinical and research interests span transitions of care, quality improvement, health systems science, children with medical complexity, and care for individuals with developmental disabilities.
Beyond her work, she enjoys hiking, exploring the outdoors, and discovering Cleveland’s vibrant restaurant scene. She cherishes time with her husband, son, and two rescue pups. Dr. Franz values UH Rainbow Babies & Children's commitment to serving the greater Cleveland Community and its leadership in tertiary and subspecialty care. As a fellow, she is eager to continue learning from the dedicated faculty and providing exceptional care to the children and families of Cleveland.
