Clinical Rotations
- Outpatient Dispensing Pharmacy Rotation
-
This rotation provides student pharmacists with hands-on experience in the operations and patient care services of a health system–based outpatient pharmacy. Students will participate in the safe and efficient dispensing of medications, applying knowledge of formulary management, third-party billing, prior authorizations, and transitions of care. Emphasis is placed on accuracy, workflow management, and collaboration within the healthcare team to optimize medication access and adherence. Learners will gain exposure to patient counseling, refill management, immunization services, and specialty medication coordination. By the end of the experience, students will demonstrate competence in outpatient dispensing processes, patient communication, and the pharmacist’s role in bridging inpatient and ambulatory care. The primary location for this rotation is at St John Medical Center Outpatient Pharmacy.
- Ambulatory Pharmacy Rotation
-
The student pharmacist will rotate through a variety of ambulatory care pharmacist roles. Student pharmacists will participate in activities such as facilitating in-person and virtual disease state management, completing chronic care management calls for patients referred to the UH Meds Ambulatory pharmacy team by specialists and primary care physician groups, conducting telehealth encounters through the Wearn Ambulatory Pharmacist Clinic, and providing services with the Employee health and Population health teams. Student pharmacists will also participate in our Culture Callbacks program by reviewing cultures and determine if patients are receiving proper antibiotic treatment based on the lab results and IDSA guidelines. The primary location for this rotation is at the UH Management Services Center 3605 Warrensville Center Road Shaker Heights, OH 44122. The student will also be assigned one primary care practice to spend time at, usually once weekly, on rotation. Clinic assignments will be coordinated in consideration of students’ commuting locations.
