Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences at UH Lake West Medical Center

University Hospitals Lake West Medical Center is located in Willoughby, Ohio and serves as a key community hospital serving the patients of Lake County. The center offers a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services including emergency and intensive care, surgical services including cardiothoracic and valve replacement, and interventional psychiatry. The center also serves as Lake County’s only Level III Trauma Center.

About Willoughby, OH

Willoughby is located approximately 20 minutes east of Cleveland and offers a variety of restaurants, shopping, and outdoor space to enjoy. Numerous amenities are located throughout the city, centered around downtown Willoughby offering unique shopping and dining experiences. Outdoor activities are centered around the Chagrin River and various Lake Metroparks locations.

Critical Care

Preceptor: Jon Manocchio, Pharm D, BCPS
Clinical Pharmacy Specialist – Critical Care

The critical care service at UH Lake West Medical Center is comprised of one medical team with an average patient load of 12-16 patients. The critical care team includes an attending physician, advanced practice providers, clinical pharmacy specialist and pharmacy trainees (students), bedside nurses, and respiratory therapy. During the rotation, an emphasis will be placed on drug therapy as it relates to the critical care setting. Specific disease states managed by the team include infectious processes, sedation and analgesia, DKA, electrolyte disturbances, cardiothoracic post operative care, hepatic and renal dysfunction, and respiratory compromise. The student will be expected to attend daily rounds, follow assigned patients, regularly meet with the preceptor for patient reviews and topic discussions, and complete longitudinal projects on an assigned basis. Rotational hours are typical 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and will vary based on daily activities. Students have a dedicated workspace and can expect a work environment conducive for learning.
