Thank you for your interest in volunteering at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. You are considered a college applicant if you are a student attending a college of higher education.
Getting Started
For the fall semester, 2nd – 4th year students and graduate students can sign up for a virtual information session. You must attend the full session to receive all application information. Please check this webpage for updates regarding availability once an information session has been filled. New volunteer in-person orientations/tours will be scheduled once students have completed the full application process. This includes submitting a volunteer application, two references, various training and legal forms, and health care screening information (negative TB test results, flu vaccination, etc.). No exceptions!

We are actively recruiting dedicated individuals for these unique volunteer roles at University Hospitals. Please review and make note of the role that interests you the most. You will be asked to list your role preferences on your volunteer application.
Available roles for Fall 2025
- Acute Care Activity Cart Volunteers: Bring joy and comfort to patients in their most challenging moments. As an Acute Care Activity Cart Volunteer, you will be the bearer of smiles, offering bedside activities, reading materials, and companionship to brighten the day of those in acute care. Your kindness will be a beacon of hope for those facing health challenges. Shifts are available Monday – Friday mornings and afternoons.
- Acute Care Unit Volunteers: As a volunteer, you'll help brighten someone's hospital stay by offering comfort items like word finds and lip balm, and friendly conversation. You'll also support the care team by handling non-clinical tasks, thereby giving nurses and staff more time to focus directly on patient care. It’s a great way to gain real-world hospital experience and build communication skills. Shifts are available most days between 8 a.m. – 8 p.m., including weekends.
- Seidman Cancer Center Infusion Courier Volunteers: Be a crucial part of the journey for cancer patients undergoing treatment at the Seidman Cancer Center. As an Infusion Courier Volunteer, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring timely and safe transportation of medical supplies between departments, contributing to seamless delivery of care. Your dedication will be a source of support for individuals navigating the complexities of cancer treatment. Shifts are available Monday – Friday mornings and afternoons.
- Center for Emergency Medicine Volunteers: The Center for Emergency Medicine (CEM) is a Level 1 Trauma Center, which is the highest acuity level. CEM volunteers assist with any nonclinical needs the unit may have and provides general information about the CEM and UHCMC to family members and visitors. Volunteers must be comfortable in a fast-paced clinical environment, have excellent communication skills and be able to work independently. Three-hour shifts are available between 7 a.m. through 10 p.m., seven days a week. Limited availability during late afternoon and early evening shifts.
