High Volume Center for Minimally Invasive Techniques

Our interventional cardiologists offer the latest technologically advanced procedures to address blood flow blockages anywhere in the body. Our team performs a high volume of catheter-based procedures, supporting high quality outcomes and consistent increases in patient referrals.

Interventional procedure options include:

  • Atherectomy of coronary and peripheral arteries
  • Atrial septal defect (ASD) closure
  • Complex angioplasty and stenting (coronary, renal, mesenteric, peripheral arteries)
  • Coronary physiology testing
  • Inferior vena cava (IVC) filter implant and extraction
  • Intravascular imaging (IVUS and OCT)
  • Left and right heart catheterization
  • Left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO)
  • Lithotripsy
  • Myocardial biopsy
  • Patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure
  • Percutaneous aortic, mitral and pulmonic valvuloplasty
  • Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for myocardial infarction
  • Percutaneous mitral valve replacement
  • Percutaneous ventricular assist device implantation

Complex Coronary Care

The Coronary Center evaluates and treats complex coronary artery disease (CAD) and chronic total occlusions. We offer the full scope of open and minimally invasive procedures. Catheter-based options include:

  • Balloon angioplasty
  • Rotational and orbital atherectomy
  • Drug-coated balloon angioplasty (DCB PCI)
  • Clot removal and distal protection devices
  • Chronic total occlusion percutaneous coronary intervention (CTO PCI)
  • “Unprotected” left main coronary artery and other high-risk percutaneous coronary interventions
  • High-risk assisted PCI with the use of intra-aortic balloon pump or percutaneous left ventricular support devices
  • Laser and lithotripsy treatment of failed stents and heavily calcified arteries

Center of Excellence in Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

University Hospitals has a well-established Center of Excellence in cardiovascular optical coherence tomography (OCT), which enables physicians to more expertly view tiny blood vessels in micro-meter resolution. In fact, our team helped develop OCT – pioneering research and clinical use of OCT since its investigational phase, and serving as the first U.S. site to teach doctors to perform OCT.

With OCT, our clinicians can view and measure important blood vessel characteristics otherwise invisible or difficult to observe with older imaging techniques. This advanced technology enables UH physicians to make more informed decisions regarding care and treatment by allowing them to:

  • View the heart's arteries and other important organs in greater detail
  • Determine the location and extent of any blockages
  • Test heart function
