Watch Dr. Michael Zacharias’ Health Talks
Michael Zacharias, DO, FHFSA, FACC, is a senior attending physician in the section of heart failure and heart transplantation at University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute. He specializes in diagnosing and treating patients with heart failure. He is regarded for helping patients and their families understand all available treatment options, from medications to advanced therapies like invasive hemodynamics, temporary and durable ventricular assist devices (VADs), and heart transplantation.
Dr. Zacharias serves as the Associate Clinical Chief of Cardiovascular Medicine and the Medical Director of the Mechanical Circulatory Support Program at UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute. He was recently named the inaugural Mehdi Shishehbor, DO, MPH, PhD, Chair in Cardiovascular Innovation, in recognition of his demonstrated expertise and dedication to advancing the field of heart failure cardiology.
An Ohio native, Dr. Zacharias completed his undergraduate degree at John Carroll University and his medical degree at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency and cardiovascular medicine fellowship at the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center, where he served as chief resident and chief cardiology fellow. He then completed an advanced fellowship in heart failure and cardiac transplantation at the University of Wisconsin Hospital before returning to Ohio to join the faculty at UH Cleveland Medical Center.
In addition to caring for patients, Dr. Zacharias is an avid clinician educator. At the completion of medical school, he was a finalist for the Dean’s Award, and at the completion of his chief residency, he was the recipient of the UMass Department of Medicine Recognition Award for extraordinary contributions to medical education. Shortly after joining the faculty at University Hospitals, Dr. Zacharias was the recipient of Teacher of the Year for both the internal medicine residency and the cardiovascular medicine fellowship. In 2022, Dr. Zacharias was inducted as one of the University Hospitals Distinguished Physicians, which recognizes “the doctors of doctors”. Dr. Zacharias currently serves as Associate Director of the Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology Fellowship at UH Cleveland Medical Center, as well as an Assistant Professor in the Section of Heart Failure and Transplant at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He also enjoys mentoring local students interested in pursuing a career in medicine.

We review these reports and implement management plans, as appropriate, to address conflicts of interest that may arise in connection with medical research, clinical care and purchasing decisions.
