About
David Sheyn, MD, is Associate Professor of Urology and Reproductive Biology at Case Western Reserve University and a faculty member of the Department of Urology at University Hospitals. Prior to joining the Department of Urology in June of 2020, Dr. Sheyn completed a four-year residency in obstetrics and gynecology and three-year fellowship in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery in the Department of Urology, both at University Hospitals. He is the current division director of urogynecology and pelvic reconstructive surgery at University Hospitals Urology Institute.
Education and Training
Dr. Sheyn was born in Lviv, Ukraine, and raised in Cincinnati. After graduating high school, he was admitted into the dual-degree program at the University of Cincinnati, where he earned a degree in biomedical engineering, and was nominee for the prestigious Herman Schneider Medal, and his medical doctorate. He completed an intern year in internal medicine at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, before starting a residency in diagnostic radiology. However, due to missing direct patient care, he switched his specialty to obstetrics and gynecology, where he was awarded the Wulf Utian Award for academic, clinical and educational accomplishments; he then pursued further fellowship training in female pelvic reconstruction in the Department of Urology. During his fellowship, he published over 30 peer reviewed publications and was a co-principal investigator on several grants.
Clinical Interests
Dr. Sheyn provides compassionate and comprehensive care for all pelvic floor disorders; including pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, neurogenic bladder, voiding disorders, hematuria, recurrent urinary tract infections, bladder and vaginal fistulas, genitourinary symptoms of menopause, neuromodulation, functional bladder and vaginal disorders in cancer survivors, complications of obstetric trauma, constipation, fecal incontinence, pelvic pain, and interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome. He also has specific interests in uterine preserving surgery for female genital prolapse and providing multidisciplinary care for pelvic floor disorders in cancer survivors. Dr. Sheyn is part of a group of physicians and surgeons that is focused on providing full spectrum care for pelvic floor disorders patients who have undergone surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy; and is actively collaborating with the University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center Cancer Survivorship Program. He also has a specific interest in the use of neuromodulation to treat bladder disorders in women with neurologic conditions such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease.
Research Interest
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Sheyn maintains a strong research presence. He has published over 100 peer reviewed research papers and his main focus is on the understanding of the causes and treatment of urgency incontinence and overactive bladder. His work focuses on identifying different phenotypes of overactive bladder and urinary incontinence in order to better understand how these conditions develop and progress and how to best individualize treatment options. He has identified differences in brain structure and urine composition in both women with overactive bladder compared to those without this condition, as well as those women who respond to certain treatments. He has also developed an artificial intelligence prediction model to identify women who may respond to anti-cholinergic therapy for overactive bladder, and this model is currently undergoing clinical verification. His goal is to apply artificial intelligence to develop a precision medicine approach to the treatment of this very impairing condition. In addition, he has performed extensive research in the area of surgical outcomes, focusing particularly on post-operative complications in women undergoing pelvic floor surgery. Dr. Sheyn serves as a peer reviewer for a number of well- known medical journals including Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery, the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and is a member of the editorial board of Obstetrics & Gynecology. He has also received research grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute, the Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and several industry partners.

I am very impressed with Dr Sheyn, his staff and office. I had nearly a 5 month wait for my first appointment. I was aware his was an extremely busy practice, he is honest, caring and dedicated to making a difference for patients. *** Compared to some of the care I get where I live. I was really impressed with my doctor in university Hospital.
The Dr listened to my concerns and actually treated me like he understood what I was trying to explain to him how I was feeling unlike the other doctor I had seen who gave me the impression he didn't believe me and thought I was making up my symptoms. As it is I am sick and Dr Shayn found out what was wrong and we have a plan of action.
It seemed Dr. Sheyn helped me with my concerns and my concerns were things he is researching.

Dr Sheyn was very attentive and reassuring.
One of the best doctors appointments I have experienced. Dr. Sheyn communicated effectively and exceeded expectations regarding subject-matter knowledge specific to my conditions. He reviewed my medical records and history before meeting with me for the exam and asked me what care and issues I wanted to have addressed. He thoroughly explained my surgical treatment options, provided data about success rates for each option, and potential ineffectiveness or negative outcomes. He considered multiple modalities, including potential mental health connections and support treatments that might contribute to successful treatment outcomes. He answered my many questions and welcomed further questions as well as outlined a specific timeline for the treatment plan. Overall, I wish all of my healthcare providers we as awesome as he is!

The appointment is not an urgent one but I had expected a call before the holiday weekend to establish a date. Dr. Sheyn is exceptional and always returns calls and follows up.
