About
Spyridon Basourakos, MD, MS, is a fellowship-trained urologist at University Hospitals and an Assistant Professor of Urology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He specializes in the surgical management of prostate, bladder, kidney, penile, and testicular cancers, with expertise in both open and robotic approaches.
A native of Athens, Greece, Dr. Basourakos earned his medical degree summa cum laude from the University of Ioannina. He went on to complete a research fellowship at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, focusing on biomarkers for the early diagnosis and progression of prostate cancer. He then completed his general surgery internship and urology residency at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he received the Alumni Council Distinguished Housestaff Award. Following residency, he pursued a Society of Urologic Oncology fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, during which he also earned a master’s degree in clinical and translational science.
Dr. Basourakos has published extensively in leading journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, European Urology, and the Journal of Urology. He has authored multiple book chapters and presented his research at regional, national and international meetings, where he has also been invited to participate in expert debates. He is an active member of the American Urological Association and the Society of Urologic Oncology, and he serves as a peer reviewer for several international journals, earning recognition as a Top Reviewer by many of them.
Now proud to call Cleveland home, Dr. Basourakos enjoys spending time with his wife, daughter and son, as well as hiking and traveling.

University Hospitals is committed to transparency in our interactions with industry partners, such as pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device companies.
